The design of the Zhishu Daliguan (Hall of Knowledge and Etiquette) is centered on the new Chinese style, blending the profound heritage of Chinese culture with the minimalist aesthetics of modern design. It aims to create a campus space for the school that combines cultural preservation with educational functions.
The design of knowledge and etiquette is rooted in the core mission of passing down and promoting traditional Chinese culture, integrating Confucian values such as “benevolence,” “knowledge and etiquette,” and “virtue that carries all things.” It seeks to provide students with a space to learn and experience Chinese culture.
The overall design fully embodies traditional Chinese aesthetics, utilizing colors like walnut brown and gray—typical of Chinese heritage—while incorporating white space design to enhance the room’s openness, creating a comfortable and culturally rich atmosphere.
Traditional elements such as window lattices, plaques, patterns, calligraphy, and landscape paintings are skillfully integrated, showcasing the symmetrical beauty and natural ambiance of Chinese culture, encouraging students to explore and develop a sense of identity and love for their heritage in this environment.
Design Philosophy:
The space adopts a classic Chinese symmetrical layout, infused with the minimalist aesthetics of modern design, using wooden structures and streamlined arrangements to reflect the harmonious blend of ancient and contemporary styles.
The design emphasizes a balance between culture and functionality, employing handcrafted wooden furniture and traditional craftsmanship elements, combined with modern technology, to create an environment that is both historically rich and practically comfortable.
The overall planning centers on the concept of “tranquility,” aiming to provide users with an ideal space away from noise, dedicated to reading, writing, and introspection.
Decorative Elements:
The walls feature carefully selected calligraphy works and landscape paintings, encompassing Tang and Song dynasty poetry as well as Ming and Qing dynasty painting styles, showcasing the diverse charm and historical context of Chinese art.
Hand-carved wooden screens and curio shelves are arranged, displaying exquisite porcelain and ancient books, adding depth and cultural richness to the space.
Desks are adorned with the Four Treasures of the Study and traditional tea sets, paired with elegant orchid planters, evoking a strong scholarly ambiance and refined literary charm.
Functional Layout:
The space includes dedicated calligraphy and reading areas, equipped with low tables, chairs, and comfortable cushions, suitable for calligraphy practice, tea ceremony experiences, or small cultural workshops, offering diverse activity spaces.
A cultural exhibition area is set up, displaying ancient books, poetry scrolls, and traditional costumes, meeting the needs for academic research, cultural learning, and exhibition purposes, enhancing visitors’ cultural engagement.
The space is designed with flexibility, adaptable to various needs such as lecture halls, exhibition spaces, or quiet rest areas, accommodating different scenarios and activities.
Spatial Atmosphere:
Soft warm lighting is used, combining recessed ceiling lights with traditional lantern-style wall lamps, creating a warm and serene ambiance that promotes mental calmness and focus.
Wooden flooring complements handwoven carpets, paired with the subtle beige walls and ink calligraphy, exuding a harmonious blend of nature and culture.
